Meet Melanie

Melanie Johnson, daughter of 14-time NHRA Top Fuel National Championship-winning crew chief Alan Johnson, grew up immersed in the world of drag racing. Some of her earliest memories are at the race track, watching her dad’s teams chase win lights and championships. She remembers standing in the doorway of the race trailer, studying the crews as they tore down engines between rounds, and riding in the tow vehicle on the return road while 11,000-horsepower Top Fuel cars thundered down the strip.

Racing was never just something she watched. It was the environment that raised her.

Her family’s legacy runs deep. Her late uncle, Blaine Johnson, won four consecutive Top Alcohol Dragster World Championships alongside Alan from 1991 to 1994 before moving into Top Fuel. In 1996, Blaine was in contention for the Top Fuel Championship when he tragically lost his life at the U.S. Nationals, just 30 days before Melanie was born.

Although she never met him, his impact on the sport and on her family has always been part of her story. That connection fuels her drive every time she straps in.

In 2025, Melanie finished 10th in the NHRA Top Alcohol Dragster National points standings, marking a major step forward in her professional driving career. She was also named to the Drag Illustrated 30 Under 30 Class of 2025, recognizing her impact and potential in the sport. Known for her focus and competitive edge, she previously recorded an average reaction time of .015 seconds in Super Comp, proving early on that she belonged behind the wheel.

Now competing in Top Alcohol Dragster, Melanie is determined to carry the Johnson family legacy forward in her own way. She combines a lifetime of trackside education with real seat time, modern media savvy, and a deep respect for the sport’s history. For her, racing is not just about chasing championships. It is about honoring where she came from while building something that is entirely her own.
